INVITATION TO A HYBRID SEMINAR

GATS-SA and the Control of Tobacco and Electronic Delivery Systems Bill
The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) was conducted in South Africa for the first time in 2021. GATS-SA Factsheet was released on World No Tobacco Day (31 May) 2022. GATS is a global standard for countries to systematically monitor adult tobacco use and track key tobacco control indicators. GATS-SA results show a 29.4% prevalence rate of tobacco use and 25.8% smoking prevalence indicating that South Africa still has a lot of work to do to in tobacco control.
The Draft Control of Tobacco and Electronic Delivery Systems Bill (the tobacco Bill) seeks to place South Africa on the path to a comprehensive implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. This bill, if passed, will institute smokefree indoor public and certain outdoor places, standardized packages for Tobacco products, a ban on the sale of tobacco products through vending machines, and a ban on advertisements at point-of-sale and, for the first time, regulate electronic cigarettes in South Africa.
This hybrid seminar will present results from GATS-SA which will shed light on the importance of the tobacco Bill.
