Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Welcome to my FAQ page. I’m Dr Catherine O. Egbe, a Research Psychologist and Public Health Scientist committed to advancing tobacco control, mental health, and substance use research in Africa and globally. Below are some of the most common questions about my work, research, and advocacy.

General Information About Me

What areas of research do you focus on?
My research focuses on tobacco control, substance use, mental health and the broader commercial determinants of health. I am particularly interested in how policies, social factors, and industry practices influence public health outcomes across Africa and other low- and middle-income regions.

How can I access your published research and academic profiles?
My publications can be accessed through platforms such as Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and institutional repositories of the South African Medical Research Council. You can also find a selection of my research articles and reports linked on my website’s “Publications” page.

How do you advocate for tobacco-free policies?
I advocate for evidence-based tobacco control policies by conducting research that informs legislation, engaging with policymakers, and providing technical support to governments and civil society. I also collaborate with the media and international organisations to raise awareness about the harms of tobacco and the tactics of the tobacco industry.

Resources and Media

What topics are covered in your op-eds and blog?
My writings address issues related to tobacco control, mental health, substance use, and the commercial determinants of health. I also write about youth protection, health equity, and strategies for countering industry interference in public health policy.

Where can I watch your videos and public presentations online?
You can find my interviews, webinars, and conference presentations on platforms such as YouTube and the South African Medical Research Council’s official channels. Selected talks and media appearances are also linked on my website under “Media.”

Are there downloadable tobacco control toolkits available?
Yes. I often collaborate on and share practical resources such as tobacco control toolkits, policy briefs, and advocacy guides developed by the South African Medical Research Council and partner organisations. These can be downloaded from the “Resources” section of my website.

Tobacco Control and Public Health

Why is tobacco control important for public health?
Tobacco use remains one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide. It not only contributes to cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illness but also deepens health and economic inequalities. Strong tobacco control measures save lives, protect young people, and promote healthier societies.

What are the most common misconceptions about tobacco products?
Many people believe that “light,” “herbal,” “smokeless” tobacco or “e-cigarette” products are safe alternatives to traditional cigarettes. In reality, these products also pose serious health risks and are often used by the tobacco and nicotine industry to recruit new users, especially among youth.

Why is the enforcement of tobacco advertising bans so critical?
Enforcement is key to ensuring that tobacco companies cannot undermine public health efforts through subtle or indirect marketing. Advertising bans reduce the appeal of tobacco products, especially to young people, help prevent the normalization of smoking in society and encourages those who smoke to quit.

What strategies are effective in helping individuals quit smoking?
Effective strategies include behavioural counselling, nicotine replacement therapy, and social support systems. Two or more strategies implemented at the same time are more likely to yield positive quit outcomes. Policies such as smoke-free environments, taxation, and warning labels also play a major role in motivating and sustaining quit attempts.

Advocacy Opportunities

How can I get involved in tobacco control advocacy?
You can get involved by joining local or national advocacy groups, participating in public awareness campaigns, supporting research, or engaging with policymakers. Even spreading accurate information within your community helps advance tobacco control.

Are you available for speaking engagements?
Yes. I am available for professional speaking engagements, lectures, and training sessions on topics related to tobacco control, mental health, public health policy, capacity development and motivation. Invitations can be submitted through the “Contact” section of my website.

How can I contribute to your advocacy initiatives?
You can contribute by partnering on research, supporting community engagement activities, or collaborating on public education campaigns. Organisations and individuals interested in collaboration are welcome to reach out for discussion.

Are there any internship or collaboration opportunities available?
Yes. From time to time, I work with postgraduate students, early-career researchers, and advocacy organisations on joint projects. Opportunities are usually announced on my website and social media platforms.
